Can I use expired flux?

Flux is one of the three things you need to make a solder joint. You need heat, metal and flux. Don’t take any chances. If it is expired, don’t use it.

Can I use expired solder paste?

It is highly unlikely that a properly stored solder paste’s performance is going to collapse 1 day after the expiration date. In fact, depending on the paste, it may still be good for months beyond the expiration date. As the flux degrades it loses its ability to adequately remove oxides on the solder powder.

What happens when flux expires?

It is very possible that when soldering flux has expired and lost its ability to clean and removed any oxides off, the soldered metals… As a result the metals will not physically and properly bind together as well as have a very poor electrical connectivity ….

Does solder flux expire?

Flux cored solder wire has a limited shelf life determined by the alloy used in the wire. For alloys containing more than 70% lead, the shelf life is two years from date of manufacture. Other alloys have a shelf life of three years from date of manufacture.

How long can flux sit before soldering?

Generally the rule is don’t paste them if you’re not going to solder that day. Overnight is probably fine, but after a few days the joints might need to be taken apart and re-fluxed if it’s started to oxidize too much, the solder won’t take. The pipe will be fine. The joints can’t oxidize if they’re covered in flux.

Does C flux go bad?

Flux does have a expiration date. hj hit the nail on the head. Anything that is “New and improved” to make your health better is a red flag. Water base flux will vaporize at a lower temperature.

How do you know if solder paste is bad?

Classic symptoms of expired paste or paste that has changed significantly from its original properties include: Significant Separation of flux and powder, Increased viscosity (leads to difficult dispensing), and in some cases large air bubble formation in the syringe.

Why does solder paste need to be refrigerated?

Solder paste should not remain on the receiving dock and should be stored in refrigeration at 40°F. In most cases, refrigeration will double the shelf life of the material as compared to storing it at room temperature. Refrigeration also acts as an additional protector against unforeseen environmental changes.

Does brazing flux have a shelf life?

For brazing flux the stated unopened shelf life is typically 1 year. If flux suitability is in doubt you can test the brazed component(s) to ensure they meet application service requirements. You can also evaluate the flux by using the performance test regimen outlined in AWS specification AWS A5. 31.

How long does a solder joint last?

Generally, if the joint holds for the first minute under pressure, it’ll hold for the next 500 years. Bending copper pipes a little to get an elbow to fit, in my view, wouldn’t compromise the quality of the solder joint you get.

How long should you wait after soldering?

Be sure to wait until the solder has cooled (2-3 minutes) before pressurizing the line to avoid the solder cracking due to a quick change in temperature.

Why are there expiration dates on wire solder?

This reduces the activity levels of the flux and therefore the wire solder may not perform as well as when it was manufactured and is why they have placed expiration dates on the material. So given all of this where do we end up?

What should I do if my solder paste expires?

The best thing to do is return the material to the supplier and have them re-qualify it for you. They always recommend that we should buy solders in smaller quantities and more often to avoid this whole expiration issue, but even the best laid plans will put you in the position of asking this question again.

What happens when you add flux to laminate board?

Adding flux is literally like pouring acid over the product and if the flux is not heated to soldering temperatures it will remain active on the surface of the board and could result in current leakage and create dendritic growth on the laminate material or between component leads which will cause failures.

Do you have to dispose of solder in can?

It is not really cut and dry until you contact your supplier and have the conversation with them. The solder manufacturers are always working to improve their materials and chemistries and they may have guidelines to help you make a determination before you toss the product in the can, i.e. dispose of appropriately of course.
