Oil filters for Harley Davidson, Evolution and Twin Cam motorcycles are very different; while they may appear identical on the outside, the oil filters are designed for completely different oiling systems. With a low pressure return line, the oil filter will also need to have a low restriction.

The Softail calls for three quarts of oil. Start with 2 1/2 quarts. It’s very important not to overfill the reservoir. Next, take the bike for a short ride to bring the engine to operating temperature.
How tight should a Harley oil filter be?
It should be 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact. Anything more then that and you run the risk of squishing the gasket out of position or warping it causing a leak.

You actually have a couple of choices for the primary drive. The optimum product would be Mobil 1 Racing™ 4T 10W-40 motorcycle oil, but it is also okay to use Mobil 1™ V-Twin 20W-50.
Can you over tighten an oil filter?
The general rule for changing out an oil filter is after you hand tighten it, take the oil wrench and give it a quarter turn to tighten it. This way, you can ensure it’s not over tightened. Over tightening the oil filter can either strip the threading, or break the O-ring.
