Who settled Transylvania County NC?
The Cherokee were the early residents of present Transylvania County and used a major transportation route known as the Estatoe Path. One of the first of its kind, the Estatoe Path, connected Native Americans to the Estatoe village in South Carolina, extended throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Why is it called Transylvania County NC?
Transylvania County was formed in 1861 from Henderson and Jackson counties. Its name is derived from the Latin words, trans meaning “across” and sylva meaning “woods.” It is in the western section of the state and is bounded by the state of South Carolina and Jackson, Haywood, and Henderson counties.
